GreenCarbonCY project boosts Cyprus’ eco-smart farming future

Date:

A new project in Cyprus is helping farmers grow food more sustainably while cutting carbon emissions from the land.

The GreenCarbonCY project, backed by the Research and Innovation Foundation, has created easy-to-use digital tools to track the health of crops and soil — and even monitor how much carbon dioxide is being released from farmland.

Using satellite images, weather data and farm-level insights, the system gives farmers a clearer picture of how their land is performing and what changes they can make to farm in a more eco-friendly way.

The tools were tested in olive groves, citrus orchards and cereal fields, where farmers tried out carbon-smart methods like improving soil care and using resources more efficiently. Experts also looked at ways to save energy and reduce waste, supporting a more circular economy in agriculture.

The project brought together local research centres, tech companies and international partners. At a recent workshop in Limassol, farmers and agricultural groups saw how the platform works — including a new online tool to help with day-to-day decisions in the field.

With Cyprus feeling the effects of climate change, the team behind the project hopes their work will help build a more resilient, sustainable and high-tech farming future.
