World’s 50 best cookies: Which Greek delights made the list

Date:

Taste Atlas has announced this year’s ranking of the 50 best cookies in the world, with Argentina’s Alfajores taking the top spot. However, in second place are the beloved melomakarona, giving Greece yet another delicious victory.

Furthermore, amygdalota (almond sweets), a traditional treat in the Cyclades, secured 14th place, moustokouloura (grape must cookies) ranked 40th, and kourabiedes (another traditional Christmas sweet like melomakarona) came in 48th.

According to Taste Atlas, melomakarona or foinikia are described as “a typical Greek Christmas treat today. These delicious semolina biscuits are traditionally flavoured with honey, orange zest, cinnamon, other spices, olive oil, and brandy.”

“Immediately after baking, the melomakarona are drenched in a honey syrup and then sprinkled with ground walnuts. Although some argue that another Greek treat known as ‘foinikia’ refers to a slightly different dessert, occasionally fried and served without walnuts, nowadays both terms are used interchangeably,” Taste Atlas adds.

The 10 best biscuits in the world are:

  1. Alfajores, Argentina
  2. Melomakarona, Greece
  3. Chocolate Chip Cookie, USA
  4. Stroopwafel, Netherlands
  5. Marranitos, Mexico
  6. Petticoat Tails, Scotland
  7. Makroud el Louse, Algeria
  8. Speculaas, Netherlands
  9. Vanillekipferl, Austria
  10. Baci di Dama, Italy
