Date:

The legacy of İhsan Ali, the renowned Turkish Cypriot doctor and advocate for unity in Cyprus is commemorated 46 years after his passing on 7 November 1978. Dr İhsan Ali’s life and work continue to serve as a reminder of the importance of harmony and mutual respect between the communities of Cyprus, transcending ethnic and religious boundaries.

Dr İhsan Ali was born in Paphos in 1904, and throughout his career he was dedicated to fostering solidarity between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, firmly believing that peace was essential for Cyprus’s future prosperity. His education in Geneva deeply influenced his outlook, reinforcing his conviction that people could coexist in harmony. Driven by this vision, he returned to Cyprus in 1934, where he contributed not only as a dedicated physician but also as an active citizen, championing the shared ideals of all Cypriots.

During the turbulent 1950s and 1960s, when communal tensions were at their peak, İhsan Ali’s unwavering commitment to democracy and equality stood as a beacon of hope. He courageously opposed fanaticism and segregation, denouncing nationalist movements that fueled division. His ideals found support and recognition when he served as an advisor to President Archbishop Makarios III and later Spyros Kyprianou. In this capacity, he advocated for a united Cyprus, expressing his vision for a country rooted in peace and cooperation.
