Fatal crash at Egnatia highway in Greece – 2 dead, multiple injured

Date:

A serious road accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Polymylos toll station on the Egnatia Motorway, under conditions of dense fog.

According to initial reports, poor visibility contributed to the accident, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Vehicle traffic in the area has been suspended, and many cars are currently immobilised.

The collision reportedly happened when a lorry travelling at speed crashed into two cars waiting to pass through the tolls using e-pass. The lorry then struck a safety barrier and violently crashed into the toll booth. The impact caused a fire to break out. The toll booth employee sustained minor injuries.

Preliminary information indicates that the deceased were passengers in one of the vehicles involved in the collision. Three others – two men and a woman – were also lightly injured.

The lorry driver has been arrested and will undergo toxicological testing. An investigation is underway to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident.

Fire service units and ambulances from Veria and Kozani rushed to the scene to provide first aid and transport the injured.

Meanwhile, according to additional sources, a second traffic accident occurred in the opposite direction of the Egnatia Motorway, towards Veria, at the same location. That incident resulted in two minor injuries.

Traffic diversion implemented

Traffic on the Egnatia Motorway at the Polymylos tolls, in the direction of Kozani, was halted yesterday following the accident. Vehicles heading towards Kozani were diverted via the Veria interchange. The Hellenic Police urged drivers to exercise extreme caution and follow the instructions of traffic officers throughout the disruption.
