The 17-year-old diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia remains intubated in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
Speaking to CNA, the spokesperson for the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY), Charalambos Charilaou, said the teenager’s condition “remains very serious”, noting that he is in the ICU “intubated with meningococcal septicaemia”.
“According to his treating doctors, his condition remains very serious, but we hope he will be discharged from hospital soon,” Mr Charilaou added.
It is recalled that last week, two other cases of bacterial meningitis were recorded, involving a high school student in Limassol and an infant from Paphos.
Regarding the six-month-old baby, Mr Charilaou said it is still hospitalised at Makarios Hospital, with its condition “improving day by day”.
Meanwhile, the 16-year-old student from Limassol, who had been admitted to a private clinic with the same illness, has already been discharged.
It is noted that in 2024, four cases of meningococcal disease were reported to the Medical Services, while since the beginning of 2025, three unrelated cases have been recorded, with no indication of an outbreak.
In a recent announcement, the Medical Services and Public Health Services stated that transmission of meningococcus requires close person-to-person contact through respiratory droplets.
The risk mainly concerns people who live in the same household as the patient (especially children), those who are in the same classroom on a daily basis, or adults working long hours in the same enclosed space (e.g. office).
It was clarified that meningococcus is not transmitted through brief or casual contact.
