Agrotourism boosts rural sustainability DepMin says

Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, has said that agrotourism contributes to the preservation and sustainability of rural communities adding that overnight stays in traditional accommodations in 2024 increased by 14% compared to 2023 and by 36% compared to 2019.

Addressing the 19th Annual General Assembly of the Cyprus Agrotourism Company, that took place on Monday, he said that agrotourism is an alternative option for the development of entrepreneurship in rural areas, while it also contributes to the preservation and sustainability of rural and mountainous communities which “is the greatest benefit”.

Koumis presented relevant data showing that arrivals to traditional accommodations in 2024 increased by 17% compared to 2023 and by 42% over a five-year period. Data also showed that overnight stays in traditional accommodations in 2024 increased by 14% compared to 2023 and 36% compared to 2019. 

He noted that the  total the amount expected to be spent through the revitalization plan for these areas is approximately 9.5 million euro for 210 projects in 200 communities. 

Our effort, the Deputy Minister of Tourism said, focuses on strengthening communities as tourist destinations, giving local authorities the opportunity to improve squares, historical and emblematic places and create attractions. 

The ultimate goal, he concluded, is to improve the tourist experience, which also has many benefits for local communities.
