Most party leaders to accompany Christodoulides in Geneva

Date:

Most parliamentary political party leaders intend on going to Geneva for the informal meeting on the Cyprus issue, to be held on March 17 and 18, leaders and their representatives told CNA on Thursday.

Replying to a question by CNA, parliamentary political parties DISY, AKEL, DIKO, EDEK, and DEPA, expressed the intention of their leaders to escort President Nikos Christodoulides to Geneva. The Greens said their deputy head, who also takes part in the National Council, would go to Geneva, while ELAM said their leader would not be going.

The UNSG’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said on Wednesday that the informal meeting is being held in the context of the Secretary General’s good offices efforts on the Cyprus issue and in line with his commitments from October 15, 2024, when he met with President Christodoulides and leader of Turkish Cypriot community, Ersin Tatar, in New York.

The informal meeting will provide an opportunity for meaningful discussion on the way forward on the Cyprus issue, he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
