Biobank.cy nano-invention advances targeted cancer treatment

Date:

The Innovation Pillar of the University of Cyprus’ Center of Excellence biobank.cy has announced the inclusion of a nano-invention, which opens new horizons for the targeted treatment of the triple-negative breast cancer, in the new cycle of innovation and business development of Cyprus Seeds.

The press release says that the present technology has the ability to enter specific cancer cells, enhancing the effectiveness of a therapeutic molecule or pharmaceutical substance, while avoiding the incorrect targeting of normal cells. Therefore, it is emphasized, it contributes to reducing the adverse effects that are usually caused by chemotherapy drugs.

Thus, the announcement notes, a treatment is guided with greater precision to its target and can be more effective, while at the same time limiting the side effects observed in pharmaceutical treatments administered without the involvement of nanoparticles.

It is also noted that this technology is already being applied by the research team as a dynamic nano-platform for the development of new therapeutic delivery strategies for rare kidney diseases.

The biobank.cy Center of Excellence is building on a cutting-edge biomedical research infrastructure, aspiring to create new knowledge for improving human health and contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of diseases.

Its mission is collecting, analysing, and preserving biological samples and health data in its state-of-the-art biobank and utilizing them for scientific, diagnostic, and educational innovation.

Cyprus Seeds is a non-profit organisation with the mission to support the commercialization of scientific research projects with strong intellectual property (IP) value and global market potential, across Cypriot universities research institutions, and centers of excellence.
