Power supply under strain ahead of extremely cold weather

Date:

With both heatwaves and snowstorms, all eyes are on the stability of the electricity supply. Concerns are growing over the adequacy of power supply as the cold front is set to hit in the coming days.

According to the Energy Operator, several power generation units are currently out of service due to either scheduled maintenance or unexpected faults, pushing reserves to critical levels. In recent days, the network has been reinforced with electricity from the occupied territories.

Efforts are underway to restore two malfunctioning units at Vasilikos and Dhekelia in the coming hours.

Due to the extreme temperatures, demand is particularly high, especially during peak hours between 18:00 and 21:00. So far, no power cuts have been implemented, but this remains a possibility, and the public will be informed if necessary. The Energy Operator is urging the public to use electricity sparingly, particularly during peak hours.
