Political leaders briefed by President at National Council

Date:

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, chaired a session of the National Council on Friday morning at the Presidential Palace, where he briefed political leaders on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue.

The meeting, scheduled for 10:00, followed the visit of the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, to Cyprus. During her visit, she stated that she looked forward to the expanded meeting in March, while also conveying the UN Secretary-General’s commitment to assisting both sides in moving forward.

President Christodoulides had previously stated that he would present specific proposals to the UN official regarding the way forward, particularly to ensure a successful outcome when the Secretary-General decides to convene the expanded meeting.

“We are ready to participate. For us, the current status quo cannot be a solution to the Cyprus issue, and as time passes, the situation continues to deteriorate,” the President said. Yesterday, he also mentioned that he was waiting for updates from Ms DiCarlo regarding her meetings.

Following her visit to Nicosia, Ms DiCarlo travelled to Athens and Ankara, where she held meetings with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozay, respectively.
