Turkey monitors Cypriot drilling, promises action if necessary

Date:

The Turkish Ministry of National Defence responded to questions regarding the Navtex issued by the Republic of Cyprus for drilling in Block 5 by Exxon Mobil, described as being “near the Turkish continental shelf.” According to the ministry, the location is outside Turkish maritime jurisdictions and lies 22 kilometres south of them.

The ministry stated that Turkey has been closely monitoring the vessel’s activities since January 19, 2025, emphasising that Turkey’s and the pseudo-state’s rights and interests will continue to be firmly protected. It was highlighted that any violation of Turkey’s continental shelf would be immediately prevented.
