Changes are expected in the Game Service as gamekeepers will be equipped with advanced technology.
Speaking on Protoselido, Game Service Representative Petros Anayiotos outlined upcoming developments. He highlighted the introduction of body cameras, which aim to ensure the safety of gamekeepers and facilitate monitoring of poaching incidents, habitat protection, and safeguarding hunting dogs from poisoned bait.
The proposed legislation not only includes body cameras but also increased penalties for specific offences. It regulates the posting of audiovisual content on social media that undermines hunting or exposes illegal activities. The use of personal firearms by hourly-paid gamekeepers is also addressed.
Anayiotos explained that body cameras will only activate during serious incidents to document events, citing recent situations where gamekeepers faced danger.
Regarding fines, he clarified that evidence is seized, offenders are reported to the police, and incidents are documented in written statements. If fines are paid, the seized evidence is returned to the rightful owners. He noted that some individuals have refused to accept fines; in such cases, the matter proceeds to court.
When asked about the declining number of hunters, Anayiotos stated that the figure has dropped below 40,000 in recent years, attributing this to lifestyle changes. He mentioned that streaming platforms and social media have reduced outdoor activities.
He stressed that this is not a phenomenon unique to Cyprus, adding that efforts are underway to address the issue.
