Trump-Zelensky meeting in Florida
US President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago in Florida for critical talks advancing the peace plan for Ukraine. Trump expressed strong optimism, stating significant progress and that peace negotiations reached the final stages. Both leaders emphasized that 95% of the plan to end the war has been agreed upon.
Trump noted the outcome of negotiations with Russia would be clarified in the coming weeks, describing talks as very difficult. He did not rule out visiting Ukraine’s parliament, mentioning progress, especially on Donbas. Zelensky confirmed focus on the 20-point framework, including potential territorial concessions.
Joint statements and optimism
During a joint press conference after over two hours of discussions, Trump highlighted covering 95% of issues despite complex matters built over the past month. Zelensky thanked Trump for the excellent meeting, stating that teams discussed all peace framework aspects and agreed 90% on the 20-point plan. Security guarantees emerged as key to lasting peace.
A follow-up call included European leaders. Zelensky announced another Trump-Zelensky meeting with European leaders in January, nearly four years since the war began in February 2022. Trump stressed that both presidents want an agreement amid heavy losses.
European allies mobilize
French President Emmanuel Macron announced a summit of Kyiv’s allies in Paris early January to finalize security guarantees for any Russia peace deal. Posted on X in French and English, Macron noted progress after private talks with Zelensky and others, including Trump.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed an hour-long call with Trump, Zelensky, and European leaders. She stressed Europe’s readiness to work with Ukraine and US partners, underscoring ironclad security guarantees from day one as pivotal.
