A Russian couple has been arrested after climbing the Empire State Building in New York City in what appeared to be an elaborate marriage proposal stunt.
The Empire State climb involved Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nikolau, 33, who identify themselves as “rooftoppers” known for scaling skyscrapers without safety equipment or official permission.
Proposal high above the city
Aerial footage showed the pair standing near the skyscraper’s antenna around 443 metres above ground level while displaying a banner reading: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”
Video footage later appeared to show one of the pair kneeling before the two embraced and kissed.
The couple also shared photographs on social media, including an image showing what appeared to be an engagement ring.

Police response and investigation
New York police responded to the incident and temporarily closed streets below the building while emergency teams handled the situation.
Body camera footage released by authorities showed emergency personnel confronting the climbers before taking them into custody.
Authorities are still investigating how the pair reached the restricted area near the antenna.
Reports suggest they may have gained access through a hatch on the building’s 103rd floor, an area not accessible to the public.
Multiple charges filed
Police said the pair face several charges, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
Officials have not announced further details regarding court proceedings.
Known for extreme rooftop stunts
Kuznetsov and Nikolau previously featured in the 2024 documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which followed their high-risk rooftop activities around the world.
The pair have reportedly climbed several skyscrapers internationally, often bypassing security measures to reach restricted locations.
The Empire State Building has also attracted other climbers over the years, including French climber Alain Robert and musician Jared Leto.
