A 53-year-old man in Nicosia lost €65,415 in a crypto investment scam after receiving a phone call from an unknown person claiming they could help him cash out profits from previous cryptocurrency investments.
According to a police statement, the man received the call on August 26 from a person speaking Greek. The caller told him they could assist him in withdrawing profits from earlier investments.
The suspect then referred him to a second person, allegedly their supervisor, who instructed the 53-year-old to install a specific online application on his computer and mobile phone.
Online banking access provided
After following the suspects’ instructions, the man gave them access to his online banking account.
The perpetrators subsequently carried out several transactions, taking a total of €65,415.
The case is being investigated by the Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
