At least four people died and 19 others suffered injuries from Russian air strikes on Kyiv overnight Thursday to Friday. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko provided the updated toll, noting Russian drones (UAVs) hit four neighborhoods where residential buildings sustained major damage.
Among the dead was a rescuer responding to a multi-story apartment struck by drones minutes apart. Four colleagues injured in the same attack. Strikes damaged capital infrastructure, cutting water supply to some districts.
Military administration head Tymur Tkachenko reported via Telegram that one Russian drone ignited a commercial center fire while another crashed near a medical facility.
Lviv missile strike suspected Oreshnik
Western Ukraine’s Lviv city infrastructure became target of Russian missile attack overnight. Mayor Andrii Sadovyi and regional governor Maksym Kozytskyy announced via Telegram posts.
Ukrainian media speculate possible Oreshnik strike, new hypersonic missile capable of nuclear warhead. Experts rushed to impact sites. Sadovyi emphasized specialists must determine if Oreshnik used. First such missile hit Dnipropetrovsk (east) in November 2024 Russian attack.
Kyiv labels Oreshnik global threat
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called nighttime Oreshnik strike near EU/NATO borders a “serious threat” to European security. Kyiv informs US, European partners, others via diplomatic channels about strike details.
“Putin uses IRBM (medium-range ballistic missile) near EU/NATO borders responding to his own hallucinations, this truly constitutes global threat requiring global responses,” Sybiha stated.
Russian Defense Ministry claimed Oreshnik strike retaliated for late December Ukrainian drone attempt on President Vladimir Putin’s residence. Kyiv labeled Russian claim “lie” regarding Novgorod region residence attack, calling today’s justification attempt “absurd.”
Putin claims Oreshnik (meaning “hazel tree” in Russian) uninterceptable, flying over ten times sound speed with destructive power comparable to nuclear weapon even with conventional warhead.
