In the early hours of this morning, officers from the Nicosia Traffic Department detected a vehicle travelling at 109 km/h in an area where the speed limit is 50 km/h. The 21-year-old driver was arrested on the spot for a flagrant traffic offence and taken to the local police station. He was formally charged in writing and released to appear in court later today for the registration of the case.
Driving under the influence:
In a separate incident at around 9:15 p.m. last night, a road collision occurred in Nicosia involving a 24-year-old driver. Under circumstances currently under investigation, the driver’s car crashed into a vehicle ahead of it. While there were only material damages reported, a breathalyser test conducted by the police revealed a final alcohol reading of 149μg—nearly seven times the legal limit of 22μg.
As a result, the 24-year-old was immediately arrested for a flagrant traffic offence related to driving under the influence of alcohol.
