26-year-old sentenced for smuggling cannabis into Cyprus

The Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court sentenced a 26-year-old woman to 16 years in prison after she was found guilty of importing and possessing 40 kilos of cannabis with the intent to supply, according to a statement by the Police Communications Branch.

The Arrest:

The arrest took place as part of coordinated efforts between the Cyprus Police and the Customs Department, aimed at identifying individuals attempting to smuggle drugs into the country.

On March 30th, the woman arrived at Larnaca Airport from abroad. During a search of her luggage, authorities found two travel bags containing vacuum-sealed nylon packages. Inside these, smaller packages were discovered, filled with a total of approximately 40 kilos of cannabis.

The Sentence:

Following her conviction, the court imposed a 16-year prison sentence, marking one of the largest drug smuggling convictions in recent months. Authorities noted that the case demonstrates the effectiveness of joint operations in combating drug trafficking.
