25th Elders’ Parliament to convene on 25 November

With the aim of actively contributing to the promotion of solutions to the various challenges faced by the elderly in Cyprus, the House of Representatives is organising the next session of the Elders’ Parliament on Monday at 10:00 a.m. The session will be chaired by the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou.

According to a statement from the House of Representatives, “with the objective of fostering a reciprocal and interactive relationship with civil society, the House supports and undertakes various initiatives to strengthen participatory democracy and pluralism.”

It further states that “the problems faced by various groups of citizens, for which members of the House seek solutions, are highlighted,” and within this framework, the House supports the institution of the Elderly Parliament.

The statement adds that “the Elders’ Parliament, managed by the Pancyprian Volunteerism Coordinating Council, aims to safeguard the inalienable right of the elderly to live with dignity, to recognise and utilise their contributions and accumulated knowledge, and to strengthen their active participation in public affairs.”

The 25th session of the Elders’ Parliament will be addressed by the President of the House at 10:00 a.m., who will also officially open the proceedings.

Greetings will be delivered by the President of the Pancyprian Volunteerism Coordinating Council and the Coordinating Body of the Elders’ Parliament, Elias Demetriou; the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Yiannis Panayiotou; the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Marilena Evaggelou; Dr. Elisabeth Constantinou on behalf of the Minister of Health; and Charalambos Christofinas, Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities.

During the session on 25 November, the reports of the Elders’ Parliament’s Social Welfare and Health Committees will be discussed and approved. These reports address the topic: “Dignified living conditions for the elderly and improved quality of life, particularly for retirees in rural and mountainous areas.”
