A 25-year-old man has died after the car he was travelling in was swept into the sea during severe storms on the Greek island of Rhodes, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).
The man was recovered dead by coastguard officers at Stegna beach, near Archangelos, as extreme weather battered the island.
According to the same reports, four vehicles were swept into the sea. The man was in one of them and was unable to escape before it was carried away.
Flooded roads and major disruption
Heavy rainfall has caused serious problems across Rhodes since the early hours of Wednesday, with municipal and regional civil protection teams responding to incidents in several areas.
An emergency alert sent through Greece’s 112 system urged residents to limit their movements and follow instructions from the authorities. Rhodes Mayor Alexandros Koliadis also appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel.
Roads between Ialyssos and Rhodes town, as well as in Afantou, Faliraki and Archangelos, were inundated by floodwaters. Numerous vehicles were left stranded as conditions deteriorated.
In Archangelos, a car with no occupants was swept away by a torrent of water.
Road closed after rockfall
Traffic was also suspended on the Archangelos–Malonas road in the Aithonas area after a large rock fell onto the roadway, damaging the surface and protective barriers.
Severe weather continued to affect the island, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and residents. Authorities urged people to follow official instructions and avoid travelling through flooded roads.
