Zelensky: US-Ukraine talks upgrade Geneva peace plan – Europe must join

Date:

US and Ukrainian negotiators have refined a Geneva peace framework during recent Florida talks, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday, calling for deeper European involvement in the process.

Kyiv faces intense pressure over a US-backed peace effort to end Russia’s nearly four-year war. Zelensky’s government seeks to counter it after Washington unveiled a plan last month that largely echoed Moscow’s demands.

Florida follow-up to Geneva

US-Ukrainian officials discussed the US proposals in Geneva over a week ago, then met again in Florida on Sunday.

“The work built on the Geneva document, and that document has been improved,” Zelensky wrote on X.

He directed his diplomatic team “to continue the most constructive possible work”.

European allies urged to join

Zelensky added: “Our diplomats work actively with all partners to ensure that European countries and other Coalition of the Willing participants engage substantively in the decision-making process.”

The Coalition of the Willing refers to nations offering post-war defence support to Ukraine.

Sovereignty and security first

Zelensky said Ukraine approaches all diplomatic efforts with maximum seriousness and is committed to real peace and guaranteed security. “This level of commitment must become mandatory for the Russian side.”

He accused Moscow of using Ukraine talks to “weaken sanctions” against Russia.

“Ukrainian intelligence shares with our partners information on Russia’s real intentions and efforts to use diplomatic work as cover to ease sanctions and block important collective European decisions,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
