Zelensky says Russia used North Korean ballistic missiles

Date:

A missile attack killed at least six people overnight in Zaporizhzhia after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces used North Korean ballistic missiles against the southern Ukrainian city.

Zelensky said the city was also struck by Russian Zircon missiles and guided aerial bombs, describing the assault as a “brutal attack” designed to cause maximum damage.

More than 100 people injured

Zaporizhzhia, which had a pre-war population of around 700,000, came under a large-scale bombardment overnight.

Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said at least six people were killed and 109 others injured.

“The city was hit by North Korean ballistic missiles, Russian Zircon missiles and guided aerial bombs,” Zelensky said in a post on X.

Russia and North Korea deepen ties

North Korea is a close ally of Russia, with relations between the two countries strengthening since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Moscow and Pyongyang have been linked by a defence agreement since 2024. Thousands of North Korean soldiers also took part in fighting alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region during 2024 and 2025.

Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of using North Korean-made weapons during the war.
