Zelensky praises Cyprus for support on EU accession

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his gratitude to President Nikos Christodoulides, recalling that the first group of EU accession negotiation chapters with Kyiv was opened during Cyprus’ presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In a post on X on Tuesday evening, Zelensky referred to a congratulatory message sent by Christodoulides to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.

“It was during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union that the first group of accession negotiation chapters with the EU was finally opened. Now it is important to open all the remaining [chapters],” Zelensky said.

Kyiv counts on Cyprus’ continued support

Zelensky said Ukraine knows it can rely on Cyprus’ continued support for its bid to join the European Union.

“We also appreciate other forms of support and hope to increase our cooperation in other areas,” he said in his post.

The Ukrainian president’s comments highlight Nicosia’s support for Ukraine’s EU accession process as negotiations continue.
