A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, hail and strong winds has been issued by the Department of Meteorology, as a low-pressure system is expected to begin affecting the area from tonight.
Today’s weather
Today’s weather will be initially mostly clear, gradually becoming mainly cloudy with high cloud cover. Locally increased clouds around midday and in the afternoon may lead to isolated showers, mainly in western areas and the mountains.
Winds will initially be variable and light at around 3 Beaufort, later turning mainly south-westerly, light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures will rise to around 15°C inland, 17°C along the coast, and about 6°C in the higher mountain areas.
Tonight: storms and strong winds expected
Tonight, conditions will turn mostly cloudy, with rain and isolated thunderstorms expected. During thunderstorms, hail is possible, while sleet and possibly snow are expected on the highest peaks of the Troodos mountains.
Winds will blow mainly south-westerly, initially light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort, strengthening along the coast to 4–5 Beaufort and later becoming temporarily very strong at 6 Beaufort. The sea will become rough after initially being slightly rough.
Temperatures will drop to around 8°C inland, 12°C along the coast, and 3°C in the higher mountains.
Outlook for the coming days
On Wednesday, local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected, with possible snow or sleet on the highest peaks of Troodos.
On Thursday, isolated showers are forecast.
By Friday, the weather is expected to turn mostly clear.
Temperatures will remain close to seasonal averages until Thursday, before a drop is expected on Friday.
