Yellow warning issued – Severe storms, strong winds and hail

Date:

Yellow alert for storms

The Department of Meteorology has issued a Cyprus yellow warning as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to affect the island at intervals from Friday morning until late evening.

Western and southern areas are likely to experience isolated severe storms, with hail possible. Winds will also change and strengthen during the weather events.

Heavy rainfall may reach 35–55 millimetres per hour in some areas, potentially causing issues in vulnerable locations. The alert is in effect from 11:00am to 11:00pm, with authorities urging the public to exercise caution.

Weather forecast details

A low-pressure system is affecting the region. Early on Friday, scattered fog is expected in the interior and eastern areas, dissipating quickly. Cloud cover will bring local rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in the west. Storms may be locally intense, with hail and shifting, strengthening winds.

In the higher Troodos peaks, sleet or snow is expected. Winds will be mostly southwest, weak to moderate, 3–4 Beaufort, with temporarily stronger gusts along the coast, 4–5 Beaufort, and up to 5–6 Beaufort in the southwest in the afternoon. Seas will be slightly rough to rough, becoming rough in the west by late afternoon. Temperatures will reach around 18°C inland, 17°C along the eastern, southern, and northern coasts, and 8°C in highland areas.

Friday night will remain mostly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms, especially in western and southern areas where conditions may be intense or prolonged. Hail is possible, and sleet or snow is expected in higher altitudes. Winds will be mainly southwest to west, moderate, 4 Beaufort, reaching strong and temporarily very strong in coastal areas. Seas will range from slightly rough to rough or choppy depending on location. Temperatures will fall to around 9°C inland, 10°C on eastern coasts, 12°C on other coasts, and 2°C in highlands, where frost may form locally.

Weekend forecast

Local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Hail may occur in storms, and snow or sleet is likely in the higher Troodos peaks. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly below average.
