A yellow warning for isolated severe thunderstorms after midday on Friday has been issued today by the Cyprus Department of Meteorology.
According to the announcement, the warning is in effect from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. today. Isolated severe thunderstorms are expected to affect mainly mountainous areas, the inland, the north, and the east. Hail is also anticipated.
Rainfall intensity is expected to range between 35–55 millimetres per hour.
Detailed forecast
A weak low-pressure system is affecting the area.
Today, the weather will initially be partly cloudy, and isolated showers are possible in coastal areas. However, the weather will gradually become mostly cloudy, and from midday onwards, developing cloud will bring local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous regions, inland areas, the north, and the east. Hail is expected during storms. The phenomena are expected to weaken later in the afternoon.
Winds will initially be south-easterly to south-westerly, light, at 3 Beaufort. They will gradually become south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate, and temporarily moderate on windward coasts, at 3 to 4 Beaufort.
The sea will be calm to slightly rough on the southern and eastern coasts, but slightly rough on the western and northern coasts.
Temperatures will rise to around 22°C inland, around 20°C on the coasts, and around 8°C in the highest mountains.
Tonight, the weather in most areas will become mostly clear, with locally increased cloud, which may give isolated showers in the west and north. Later during the early morning hours, low cloud and patchy fog or mist may form, mainly inland and in eastern areas.
Winds will turn downslope, light, at 3 Beaufort, and the sea will generally be calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures will drop to around 9°C inland, around 12°C on the southern and eastern coasts, around 14°C on the western and northern coasts, and around 4°C in the highest mountains.
Saturday will start mostly clear with locally increased cloud, but from midday onwards, developing clouds are expected to give isolated showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm, mainly in the mountains, some inland areas, and the east.
On Sunday, increased mid- and high-level clouds will be observed, with isolated showers expected from time to time.
Monday will be mostly clear with increased mid- and high-level clouds.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly until Saturday, but will gradually rise by Monday, remaining above the average climatic values for the season.
