Yellow high-temperature warning issued, Cyprus braces for 40°C

Date:

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow high-temperature warning as scorching weather settles in across the island. The warning is in effect from 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 40°C inland.

The weather will remain mostly clear throughout the day, with light variable winds at first, later turning mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. Winds may become locally strong, up to 5 Beaufort, particularly along the southern coast in the afternoon. Seas will be calm to slightly rough.

Temperature forecast:

  • Inland: 40°C
  • West coast: 32°C
  • Other coastal areas: around 35°C
  • Mountains: 29°C

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly clear, though some patchy fog or low cloud may form near southern and eastern coasts in the early morning. Winds will ease to light variable (around 3 Beaufort), and seas will stay calm to slightly rough. Overnight temperatures will drop to 23°C inland, 22°C along the coast, and 20°C in mountainous regions.

This heatwave is expected to continue through Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with temperatures remaining well above average for the season and no significant change forecast.

Heat safety tips:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Stay hydrated: drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Wear light, breathable clothing and apply sunscreen regularly.
  • Seek shade and limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak hours.
  • Check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, children, and pets.

Be weather-wise and take precautions during this period of extreme heat, especially while the high-temperature warning is in effect.
