Yellow heat warning issued from 1pm as temperatures hit 41°C

Date:

A yellow heat warning is in force on Friday, with temperatures expected to climb to around 41°C inland as a relatively warm air mass affects the island.

The Department of Meteorology said the warning for extreme temperatures will be in effect from 1pm until 4pm.

Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach around 41°C inland and 32°C in the higher mountains.

Temperatures reach 41°C inland

Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, while a relatively warm air mass is influencing conditions across Cyprus.

Friday will be mostly clear, although increased cloud is expected to develop over the mountains after midday.

Winds will initially be light and variable at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. Along the southern and south-western coasts, winds could strengthen to 4 to 5 Beaufort during the afternoon.

The sea will generally be calm to slight, becoming slight in windward areas during the afternoon.

Temperatures will reach around 41°C inland, 33°C along the western coast, 36°C along the remaining coasts and 32°C in the higher mountains.

Warm night ahead

Friday night will remain mostly clear, although localised low cloud is expected to develop along coastal areas later in the night.

Winds will weaken and gradually become downslope, remaining light at 3 Beaufort.

The sea will generally become calm to slight, although slight conditions will persist locally in windward areas.

Temperatures will fall to around 25°C inland and along the coast and 19°C in the higher mountains.

Temperatures remain above seasonal averages

Saturday and Sunday will be generally mostly clear, with periods of increased local cloud.

More localised cloud is expected at times on Monday, with an isolated shower possible over the mountains after midday.

Temperatures will fall slightly on Saturday before remaining largely unchanged through Monday. Despite the drop, they are expected to remain above seasonal averages.
