World Conference of Cyprus Diaspora begins in Nicosia

Under the slogan “From the seas of the world… to the land that unites us,” the World Conference of Cyprus Diaspora begins this evening in Nicosia.

The event will run from August 26 to 29 and is organised by the Expatriates and Repatriates Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the leadership of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA), and the World Organisation for Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK).

The conference proceedings will be officially opened by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

The opening ceremony takes place at 1900, this evening at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. It will be broadcast live on CyBC at 19:00 and is open to the public. A musical performance will precede the speeches, featuring Vasilis Philippou on vocals and percussion, Odysseas Toumazou on guitar, and Christos Isidorou playing the lafta and pithkiavli.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, will welcome the delegates, while the President of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), Andreas Papaevripides, the President of the International Coordinating Committee – Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), Philip Christopher, and the President of the Youth World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK), Christos Touton, will also address the opening ceremony.

Representing the Greek government, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis-Michael Loverdos, will speak at the ceremony, alongside President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, and Archbishop of Cyprus, Georgios.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, will deliver the keynote address before formally declaring the conference open.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference aims to underscore the vital role of the Cypriot diaspora as a bridge between Cyprus and the countries where overseas Cypriots live and work.

Representatives of the Cypriot diaspora from around the globe will attend the conference. They will have the opportunity to hear from senior officials of the Republic of Cyprus about the latest developments on the Cyprus issue, as well as topics related to foreign policy, energy, defence, missing persons, education, and talent repatriation. The press release also noted that discussions will include Cyprus’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.

One of the key highlights of the conference will be a reception hosted by the President of the Republic, where he will honour distinguished members of the diaspora.

Additionally, on August 28, delegates will attend a special gathering in Athienou to pay tribute to the late benefactor and Athienou native, Nikos Mouyiaris.

On August 29, a concert titled “Nothing is over yet” will be held at Skali Aglantzia, featuring performances by Cypriot artists. The concert will commemorate the 51st anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of the island.
