World Bank approves $650m loan for Istanbul resilience

Date:

The World Bank has approved a $650 million loan to support the Istanbul Resilience Project, aimed at improving the city’s preparedness for emergencies and boosting its capacity to respond to disasters and climate risks.

In a statement on Friday, the World Bank said the project is focused on protecting lives and economic activity in Turkey’s largest city and improving its ability to withstand future crises. The investment will help reinforce Istanbul’s infrastructure and emergency response systems, ensuring that the city is better equipped to handle both natural and climate-induced disasters.

The Istanbul Resilience Project is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impact of large-scale risks on urban populations and economic centres.

The World Bank noted that the initiative aligns with its global objectives of supporting sustainable urban development and reducing vulnerability to climate change.
