Police in Nicosia are investigating a new online fraud case after a 32-year-old woman reported losing more than €2,200 in a scam involving an accommodation reservation.
The woman reported the case to the Nicosia CID on Tuesday, saying she had booked accommodation through an online booking platform on August 4.
That same day, an unknown person contacted her, claiming to be the accommodation’s landlord.
The suspect allegedly told her that they could offer her a lower price if she cancelled her original booking and made a new reservation through another online travel services platform.
The woman was then sent a link and followed the instructions.
More than €2,200 transferred
On August 11, the woman transferred more than €2,200 to a bank account provided to her.
However, she did not receive any confirmation of the new reservation and subsequently realised that she had fallen victim to a scam.
The case is being investigated by the Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia CID.
Police issue warning over online bookings
Police are urging the public to exercise particular caution when making accommodation reservations online and to avoid responding to suspicious messages or payment requests.
Anyone receiving a message concerning an accommodation booking is advised to contact the hotel or accommodation provider directly using their official contact details.
Police also warn against making payments through links sent via messages or email without first verifying their authenticity.
Anyone who has clicked on a suspicious link and entered bank card details should contact their bank immediately and cancel the card.
