What to do if sirens sound – nearest shelter & emergency kit

Date:

The Ministry of Interior has issued Cyprus civil defence guidance to help citizens prepare for potential threats and respond safely to hostile incidents.

Emergency alerts in urban areas

In case of a threat, sirens will sound in affected areas, and authorities will provide instructions for residents to move to shelters or temporary protection points.

Civil Defence sirens serve as an immediate alert system, aiming to inform residents quickly so they can take protective measures. Trained personnel from the Neighbourhood Watch Department patrol affected areas and guide citizens.

Siren signals and actions

Authorities activate sirens only when there is an imminent or immediate threat requiring rapid public notification. The key signals are:

  • Start of alert: Wavering sound – indicates serious danger; residents must stay calm and follow official instructions.
  • End of alert: Continuous sound – indicates the immediate threat has passed; residents should remain vigilant and continue monitoring updates.

If a siren sounds:

  • Stay calm and avoid panic.
  • Follow verified sources such as radio, television, or official social media channels. Do not spread rumours.
  • Prepare to move to a shelter if instructed, but do not move unnecessarily.
  • Follow instructions from Civil Defence and other authorities.

Finding and using shelters

Civil Defence shelters protect against explosions, debris, and other risks. Stay only until the danger passes. Residents can locate the nearest shelter via the SafeCY app or by contacting the Civil Defence Operations Centre at 22 403 451 or 22 403 452.

Move calmly to the shelter and follow staff instructions. Take essential items:

  • ID or important documents
  • Cash
  • Water, dry food, and baby supplies if needed
  • First aid supplies and essential medications
  • Torch, portable radio, and spare batteries

If no shelters exist nearby

If no shelters are available:

  • Identify a safe area indoors, away from windows and doors.
  • Keep a portable radio, torch, water, food, medication, and a first aid kit.
  • In case of an alert, lie face down and cover your head.
  • Outdoors, lie face down in a ditch, ravine, or low ground if possible.
  • Stay calm and follow official instructions.

Communities near British Bases and Paphos Airport

For communities including Pyla, Ormideia, Xylophagou, Xylotymbou, Timi, Anarita, and Mandria, Civil Defence has prepared evacuation plans. Local councils and deputy mayors have received instructions.

Residents will be informed today via WhatsApp, Viber, or SMS about temporary protection points. Civil Defence personnel will be present at these locations to guide and assist citizens safely.
