Weekend weather: Cyprus heatwave peaks at 44°C

Date:

The Cyprus heatwave is expected to peak today, Friday, with the Meteorological Service issuing an orange warning in effect until 5pm. Inland temperatures are forecast to hit a scorching 44°C, while the mountains will see highs of 34°C. Coastal areas will remain slightly cooler, ranging between 32–36°C.

With extreme heat comes heightened fire danger: the Forestry Department has declared a Red Alert for wildfire risk. Authorities are urging the public to avoid any activities that could spark fires. Causing a fire is a criminal offence and carries strict penalties. If you see smoke or flames, call 1407 (Forestry) or 112 (Fire Service) immediately.

Today’s weather will be clear and intensely hot across the island. Winds in the morning will vary by region, blowing south-easterly to south-westerly in the east, south and west, and north-westerly to north-easterly inland and in the north. By afternoon, winds will shift to south-westerly to north-westerly at 3–4 Beaufort. Seas will be slightly rough in the west and north, and calmer elsewhere.

Tonight will remain mostly clear, with patchy mist or low cloud possible around dawn, especially in southern and eastern areas. Winds will ease slightly, and temperatures will drop to around 28°C inland, 25°C on the coast, and 24°C in the mountains.

Looking ahead, the Cyprus heatwave will continue through the weekend. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be sunny and very hot, with no significant change in temperature. Conditions will remain well above seasonal averages.

Monday will stay mostly clear, with a slight dip in temperature, though still higher than typical for this time of year.
