Regarding the dangerous phenomenon of illegal street races on Cyprus’ roads, Lieutenant of the Traffic Department Headquarters, Tasos Asiikkis, spoke on the show Protoselido, emphasizing that the Police remain in constant vigilance and have already taken specific measures.
As he explained, in recent months — and even earlier — the Police received numerous reports and complaints from residents and passing drivers. “We have taken measures since then, and Larnakos Avenue is now patrolled almost daily by members of the Nicosia Traffic Branch, with the corresponding reports being carried out.”
In fact, according to a recent briefing, the phenomenon is also reflected in the data. “On these specific avenues, from the beginning of the year until July, almost 800 reports were issued in total, more than 90% of which concerned exceeding the speed limit.”
Along with the patrols, “speed cameras are also operating, through which additional speed checks are carried out,” while policing is reinforced during the night hours.
Residents’ complaints
The discussion also touched on residents’ complaints that the Police respond with delay. Mr. Asiikkis acknowledged the problem but explained the limitations. “Unfortunately, once the Police are notified about a specific area, they cannot immediately go there because, at the same time, other investigations may be underway or officers may be handling an urgent incident that cannot be abandoned.”
Checks for modified vehicles
When asked about the involvement of modified cars in these street races, Mr. Asiikkis said that “from time to time, vehicles with engine modifications are confiscated.”
“These are not phenomena known only in Cyprus. They also occur in other countries… such as, for example, in France. In France this phenomenon is particularly intense,” he added.
