Spain sends frigate after drone attack
Cyprus naval protection is being reinforced as several European countries prepare to deploy naval units to the region amid escalating tensions.
Spain’s Ministry of Defence announced it will send a frigate to Cyprus for protection missions. The Spanish vessel will accompany the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and Greek warships operating in the area.
The deployment follows a drone attack on the British base at Akrotiri, reportedly carried out by an Iranian drone.
Spanish frigate to support defence missions
According to the Spanish defence ministry, the frigate Cristóbal will carry out missions focused on protection and air defence.
The vessel may also assist in the evacuation of non-military personnel if necessary, as part of wider security operations in the region.
The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen Cyprus naval protection amid instability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
EU coordination on security support
Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said discussions have taken place with defence ministers from Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, and France to establish ongoing coordination between defence ministries to monitor the crisis.
Speaking in the Italian parliament, Crosetto said European partners agreed that the European Union should send a clear message of support to Cyprus.
He noted that Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Spain are likely to send security assistance to the island.
Naval units expected in coming days
Crosetto added that under EU treaty provisions, member states are expected to support another member country that faces an attack.
“In the coming days, together with countries such as Spain, the Netherlands, and France, we will send naval units for the protection of Cyprus,” he said.
The deployments underline growing international cooperation aimed at strengthening Cyprus naval protection and regional security.
