VIDEO: Heavy rainfall leaves areas of Cyprus without power

Date:

Rainfall was recorded across various areas of Cyprus on Monday afternoon (16 December), leaving several regions without power.

Speaking to SigmaLive, Christina Papadopoulou, spokesperson for the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC), confirmed that power outages affected areas in the Nicosia and Paphos districts. Specifically, a medium voltage fault occurred in Astromeritis, and Paphos faced issues due to weather conditions.

Power outages were also reported in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts.

According to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO), a technical fault at 15:12 in the transmission system (total blackout of the Larnaca Substation and Commercial Centre) caused a loss of 45 MW of power consumption in the Larnaca-Famagusta region. Efforts are underway to restore electricity as quickly as possible, the announcement said.

Weather report:

The Meteorological Service forecasts mostly cloudy skies this afternoon, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected, initially in the north and west, spreading to other parts of the island. Hail may occur during storms. These phenomena are expected to weaken gradually by the evening. Winds will initially blow south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate, at 3 to 4 Beaufort, occasionally stronger (4 to 5 Beaufort) in windward coastal areas. Later, winds will shift to a northerly to north-easterly direction at the same intensity. During storms, winds may become stronger and more variable. The sea will generally be slightly rough.

Tonight, the weather will remain partly cloudy, with isolated showers likely, particularly along the northern coast, where isolated thunderstorms are also possible. In higher mountainous areas, sleet or snow may fall. Winds will blow northerly to north-easterly, light to moderate, at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and occasionally moderate (4 Beaufort) along northern and eastern coasts. The sea will remain slightly rough overall. Temperatures will drop to around 10°C inland, 12°C on the coasts, and 2°C in the higher mountains, where frost is expected locally.

Outlook:

  • Tuesday: Partly cloudy with occasional localised clouds. Isolated showers are expected, primarily in the morning and early afternoon, clearing later in the day. Winds will be primarily north-easterly and, locally in the west, south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate (3 to 4 Beaufort), and occasionally moderate (4 Beaufort) along windward coasts. The sea will be slightly rough but temporarily rough in northern and eastern areas. Temperatures will reach around 16°C inland, 18°C on the coasts, and **8°C in the higher mountains.
  • Wednesday and Thursday: Mostly clear skies with occasional increased cloud cover in some areas.
  • Friday: Mostly clear, though isolated showers may occur in south-eastern areas.

Temperatures are expected to remain stable through Friday, staying close to the seasonal average.
