Vehicle circulation licenses for 2026 can be renewed starting today, January 7. The Transport, Communications and Works Ministry allows renewals for 3, 6, 9, or 12 months.
Final renewal deadline is Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at 23:59. After this date, fines apply: €10 plus 10% of the license fee amount owed for current year.
Required documentation
Renewal requires:
- Certificate of Roadworthiness
- Valid insurance coverage
Process completes when “Print Circulation License” screen appears showing expiry month/year in circular frame plus vehicle registration number. Interrupted processes must restart completely.
Road Transport Department improved payment system with enhanced license issuance controls based on payments received.
Payment and deadlines advice
Ministry urges early renewal to avoid system overload and delays during final days. No renewal notifications sent to vehicle owners.
Vehicle owners must update contact details in RTD registry to receive vehicle information like recall notices.
Vehicle immobilisation rules
Vehicles renewed for 2025 not requiring 2026 renewal must submit immobilisation notification to RTD. Online option available at RTD website.
Undocumented immobilisation continues license fee obligation. 2025 non-renewed, non-immobilised vehicles deleted from registry unless 2025 fees paid and 2026 license renewed by March 11 deadline.
Exemptions and alternatives
Online renewal unavailable for:
- Embassy vehicles
- Large family private buses
- Quarry vehicles
- Antique vehicles (€25 fee)
- UN vehicles
- Code 04 exemption organisations
These owners contact RTD Provincial Offices for payment.
Internet-challenged citizens use RTD Provincial Offices, Citizen Service Centres (KEP), and Citizen Centres (KEPO) for renewals.
Vehicle destruction process
Destroyed vehicles require RTD Form TOM 98A with “Certificate of Destruction” from licensed waste vehicle processing facilities to cancel registration from destruction date, relieving license fee obligation.
Licenses renewable online throughout year except listed exemptions.
