The United States has confirmed Cyprus’ progress in meeting the technical requirements for joining the Visa Waiver programme, but Washington is currently reassessing the scheme and has not added any new countries.
Sources familiar with the matter told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the US has confirmed the progress made by Cyprus towards meeting the technical requirements for participation in the Visa Waiver programme.
No new countries added
According to the sources, the US government is conducting a broader reassessment of the programme and has not admitted any new countries during this process.
The development affects the prospects of Cyprus joining the Visa Waiver programme, which allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the US for short stays without obtaining a visa, subject to the programme’s requirements.
Cyprus has completed technical criteria
During a July visit to Cyprus by Rob Law, Under Secretary for Strategy, Policy and Plans at the US Department of Homeland Security, it was reaffirmed that Cyprus had completed the required technical criteria.
Following his meeting with Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki, a statement said that further consideration of the issue would take place in accordance with US internal procedures.
The latest assessment therefore relates to the wider review of the Visa Waiver programme rather than a failure by Cyprus to meet the technical requirements.
