A US government aircraft made an unexpected landing in Cyprus in recent hours during a flight to the Middle East, amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region.
Flight route and diversion
The aircraft, with call sign SAM069 and registration 01-0015, took off from Joint Base Andrews (KADW), the hub for transporting senior US officials, heading east over the Atlantic.
Flight tracking shows it first landed at Shannon Airport (EINN) on 2 February 2026 at 03:44 UTC, before continuing to Bahrain International Airport (OBBI). Due to low visibility in Bahrain, the plane diverted to Larnaca International Airport (LCLK). After a short stay in Larnaca, the aircraft resumed its journey to Bahrain once weather conditions improved.

Diplomatic context
The flight occurs amid intensified discussions between Washington and Tehran following renewed talks in Oman. Diplomats do not rule out the possibility that the aircraft transported a special envoy or senior official for contacts in the Middle East.
The choice of Bahrain as the final destination is notable, as the country serves as a strategic hub for US forces in the Persian Gulf and hosts significant US military presence.
