President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides expressed his satisfaction on Wednesday over the progress made in implementing the government’s relief measures for those affected by the devastating wildfires in the Limassol district.
Speaking at the start of the Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, the President also noted the arrival of a team of US experts, calling for full cooperation from all relevant services, as “they are coming to help us.”
“Today I want us to discuss the implementation of what we announced after the fires,” President Christodoulides said.
“I am satisfied with what I see so far regarding the implementation of our decisions. The big challenge is to see them fully implemented. Since several ministries are involved, I would like us to discuss this today,” he added.
Starting with the Ministry of Interior, which he said has a major responsibility, the President highlighted that one-off compensation payments have already been approved and are being distributed.
“So far, 236 of the 295 cases have been paid, and it is important that all affected receive compensation by the end of the week,” he said.
He added that a list has been completed of the cost of equipment for each home, which will be provided alongside the compensation.
Teams from ETEK (the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber) have completed cost assessments for around 300 partially damaged buildings. Once inspections are completed, the first payments will go to primary residences requiring repairs. “Our goal is to proceed, if possible, within the next week,” he noted.
The President stressed the need for homes and businesses to be restored quickly so residents can return to their daily lives, acknowledging that this will take time.
Regarding the Ministry of Commerce, the President said two measures are in place to support businesses and compensate for loss of raw materials, goods, and equipment. He welcomed the start of compensation payments to businesses and self-employed workers.
“The EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus) did an excellent job. I spoke yesterday with all community leaders. Power has been restored to almost 92% of the areas, with 8% remaining in remote properties,” he added.
He also highlighted the decision to cover electricity bills up to €500 for all residential and business customers whose homes and businesses were affected.
On the Ministry of Agriculture’s scheme for immediate compensation and support for farmers and livestock breeders for one year to cover loss of income, President Christodoulides said payments have already begun.
“We must move even faster. So far we have compensated over 775 people. It is important to complete this by next week,” he said.
Two schemes launched on 2 August to restore operations, infrastructure, and mechanical equipment have already received 470 applications.
“Even though it is August, the public service must work to respond. It is also important to mention that yesterday, with the competent service, full restoration has been completed in all communities. We need to look at flood protection works now. The locations needing interventions have been identified, so action must be taken immediately,” he added.
From 1 August, a plan has been in place for 100% generator coverage in fire-affected communities and 80% in other communities.
Regarding the Ministry of Labour, the President said it is important that data has been gathered for the support plan for workers unable to work due to damage at their workplaces. Over 100 workers have applied so far, with the process continuing.
On the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, he said the services are in contact with 222 families, 115 of which have been given financial assistance for urgent needs. “Social support will continue- it is especially important,” he added.
As for the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, he stressed the need to complete one-off support for accommodation providers.
According to the President, the Ministry of Transport is today presenting a proposal to cover a category not previously included — vehicles and machinery destroyed in the fire.
He also said he had received reports from four government services last Friday containing recommendations. “Under your responsibility, the immediate implementation of these recommendations must be arranged. Regular monitoring is needed to ensure they are implemented and the Cabinet is informed,” he said.
On the request for assistance from the US government, the President confirmed a positive response. The 10-member team of US experts will arrive in Cyprus at 3pm on Wednesday.
“They have international experience: they have handled wildfires in California, Hawaii, and in other countries. They will investigate and assess the management of the recent wildfires. Their mission will include examining the causes, conditions, spread, firefighting, and evaluating management measures. They will submit a report with documented recommendations for improvements based on their findings, addressing weaknesses and all aspects of response,” he explained.
“I expect, and please convey this, that all relevant ministry services will fully cooperate with them. I will also meet with them personally while they are in Cyprus. So please ensure the services work with them fully and facilitate anything they request. They are coming to help us,” the President concluded.
