Untaxed tobacco seized at Larnaca Airport, five British nationals arrested

Untaxed tobacco weighing a total of 74.75kg was detected and seized by Customs Department officials at Larnaca Airport on August 8.

Five people were arrested in connection with the case. They are five British nationals who were preparing to depart for Manchester and had hundreds of packets of rolling tobacco in their luggage without the required markings and security features.

The five suspects appeared before the Larnaca District Court on Monday, which ordered their two-day detention.

Almost 75kg seized

The Customs Department said the first passenger had 300 packets weighing 50 grams each, for a total of 15kg.

The second passenger had 235 packets of 50 grams each, totalling 11.75kg.

The third passenger had 300 packets weighing 50 grams each, totalling 15kg.

The fourth passenger had 360 packets of 50 grams each, totalling 18kg.

The fifth passenger had 300 packets of 50 grams each, totalling 15kg.

The five passengers were arrested for offences committed in flagrante delicto, while their luggage and its contents, totalling 74.75kg of tobacco, were seized.
