Unknown people hung a large banner on the Reserve Commandos memorial in Strovolos. The message reads: “There is no crime without criminals and no treason without traitors”.
The monument, erected by the Reserve Commandos Association, honours those who died on 15 July 1974 and has triggered intense public debate in recent weeks.
The banner appeared shortly after strong protests from organisations of relatives of resistance fighters and democratic groups, who argue that the memorial offends historical memory and attempts to equate victims with perpetrators of the coup period.
The Pancyprian Organisation of Relatives of Fallen Resistance Fighters called on the President of the Republic, the government, democratic parties, Strovolos municipality and the Nicosia NDLGO to act immediately to remove the monument, noting that it was built without required permits.
Deputy Minister Irini Antoniou said a special committee handles monument approvals. Authorities have already decided next steps. The Nicosia NDLGO is managing the case. The government wants to avoid escalation.
Dialogos portal first published the photo.
