Four University of Cyprus academics have received international recognition in scientific rankings, with Professor George Hadjigeorgiou placed among the top 1% of scientists worldwide and three colleagues ranked in the top 5%.
The distinctions recognise the research achievements of academics at the university’s School of Medicine and their contributions to scientific knowledge.

Four academics recognised in international rankings
Hadjigeorgiou was ranked among the top 1% of scientists by the AD Scientific Index.
Associate Professors George Nikolopoulos and Panagiotis Zis, along with Assistant Professor Nikolaos Kadoglou, were placed among the top 5%.
Zis and Kadoglou also featured in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists list for 2025, in the Single Year Scientific Impact category.

How the scientific rankings work
The AD Scientific Index uses Google Scholar data to assess researchers based on their total H-index, a measure that considers both their research output and the citations their work receives over their careers.
Stanford’s ranking, also known as the Ioannidis List, uses Scopus data to assess scientific impact during the most recent reference year.
Its composite indicator takes into account citations, the H-index and other measures, while also considering a researcher’s position in the author list.
The two rankings use different methodologies and databases to assess research performance and scientific impact.
University expands its international presence
The University of Cyprus said the distinctions highlighted the international reach of its academics’ research and their contribution to scientific knowledge.
The recognition comes as the School of Medicine prepares to expand its international educational offering, with an English-language medical programme scheduled to launch in 2027.
