The United Nations has rejected reports that UNFICYP commander Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam of Bangladesh has left the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus.
UNFICYP spokesperson Aleem Siddique clarified that Minhazul Alam remains Force Commander and continues to carry out his duties and responsibilities within the mission.
“For the avoidance of any doubt, Lieutenant General Minhazul Alam remains the UNFICYP Force Commander and continues to discharge his duties and responsibilities in the mission,” Siddique said.
The UN statement follows a report published by Northeast News on 9 September, which claimed that Minhazul Alam had returned to Bangladesh on 4 September on a commercial flight from Cyprus and had subsequently been withdrawn from UNFICYP.
Allegations cited in the report
According to Northeast News, the case centred on written complaints allegedly submitted by two officers serving in the mission, including the Force Commander’s aide-de-camp (ADC).
The complaints reportedly concerned Minhazul Alam’s conduct towards his aide, which sources cited by the publication described as harsh and inappropriate. The report also claimed that the complaints had been referred to a relevant UN medical or psychiatric service.
However, the precise content of the complaints has not been made public, and the UN has not confirmed that any misconduct was established against the UNFICYP commander.
The report also referred to claims concerning administrative facilities or privileges that Minhazul Alam allegedly requested or obtained. These claims have not been independently confirmed.
The UN’s latest clarification confirms that the UNFICYP commander remains in his position and continues to perform his responsibilities within the mission.
