Cyprus talks efforts are expected to feature in discussions between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his Personal Envoy on the Cyprus issue, Maria Angela Holguin, at UN headquarters in New York on Friday.
The meeting comes after Holguin’s recent visits to Nicosia, Ankara and Athens as part of ongoing diplomatic consultations.
Briefing on regional consultations
According to the UN Secretary-General’s official schedule, the meeting is set to take place shortly after 12:00 noon New York time (19:15 Cyprus time).
Holguin is expected to brief Guterres on the outcomes of her meetings with both sides in Cyprus, as well as discussions held with Greece and Turkey.
Continued diplomatic efforts
Following her meeting in New York, Holguin is scheduled to travel to Brussels for talks with European Union officials before returning to Cyprus for further meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
The UN Secretary-General is reportedly aiming to finalise a new informal 5+1 meeting in New York or Geneva in late July or early August.
Goal of renewed negotiations
The proposed meeting is intended to support efforts towards the eventual resumption of formal Cyprus talks.
Diplomatic sources say the process remains focused on maintaining momentum between the two sides and key international stakeholders.
