Ukrainians in Cyprus condemn pro-Russian Victory Day events

Date:

The Facebook page Ukrainians in Cyprus has publicly criticised Cypriot authorities for allowing 9 May “Victory Day” celebrations, organised by the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, to go ahead.

While many EU countries have banned such events and symbols over their links to Kremlin propaganda and the war in Ukraine, Cyprus has not followed suit. This has led to concerts, parades, motorcades, and film screenings using Soviet and Russian state imagery — even in cities that host large Ukrainian refugee communities.

The group warned that this leniency is enabling public displays of Russian propaganda on EU soil. They called on Cyprus to align itself with democratic values and the broader European stance against Russian aggression, rather than continue to serve as an outlier.
