Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday to formalise a new Ukraine-UK partnership aimed at countering cheap attack drones. The agreement will combine Ukrainian expertise with the UK’s industrial capabilities to develop drones and other defence technologies.
Joint defence collaboration
Downing Street said the deal will enhance cooperation in defence manufacturing and supply while also seeking partnerships with third countries to bolster international security. As part of the initiative, the UK will provide £500,000 to fund an AI centre of excellence in Kyiv.
Focus on drone and battlefield innovation
UK Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted the importance of leveraging Ukrainian innovation, stating that it is “increasingly important that we build on Ukrainian expertise and innovation.” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer added that drones, electronic warfare, and rapid battlefield innovation are central to national and economic security, and the partnership will strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russia.
Context of ongoing conflicts
The meeting comes as Ukraine faces challenges from Russia’s ongoing invasion, now in its fourth year, and against a backdrop of the US-Israeli war with Iran. Rising oil prices from the Middle East conflict are further fueling Russia’s war capabilities. Zelensky is touring European capitals to secure support and maintain international focus on the Ukraine conflict.
