Britain faces extreme heat and rising safety risks

The United Kingdom has recorded its hottest May day ever, with temperatures reaching 35°C in London during the fourth day of an unusual heatwave, according to the UK Met Office.

The record comes just a day after temperatures hit 34.8°C at Kew Gardens in southwest London, marking a continued rise in extreme heat conditions across the country.

Deaths linked to water incidents during heatwave

Authorities have confirmed that four teenagers have drowned since Sunday, reportedly while attempting to cool off in water during the unusually hot weather.

The incidents occurred in separate locations across England, including Sheffield, Manchester, Lincoln and near Birmingham, according to local police and county authorities.

In a separate case, a 60-year-old man also drowned while trying to rescue others in distress at a beach in Cornwall, according to UK media reports.

Night-time temperatures remain unusually high

The Met Office confirmed that overnight temperatures also broke records, with the night of Monday to Tuesday described as the warmest ever recorded in May.

In some areas, temperatures did not fall below 20°C, classifying it as a “tropical night”.

Health alerts and transport disruption

A “yellow” health alert remains in place across much of the UK, particularly in southern regions and London, and is expected to remain active until Thursday afternoon.

Transport services have also been affected, with Network Rail imposing speed restrictions on trains due to the extreme heat impacting infrastructure.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to remain high throughout the week, with a noticeable drop forecast from Sunday.

Authorities continue to warn the public about safety risks linked to the ongoing UK heatwave.
