Two hospitalised after gas release triggers explosion in Vasiliko

A gas explosion injured two people on Thursday afternoon during maintenance work at the EAC power station in Vasiliko, Larnaca district, authorities said.

Explosion during maintenance

According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, a call was received at around 13:13 reporting a violent release of inert gas used for firefighting purposes at the EAC station in Vasiliko.

The incident occurred while maintenance works were being carried out at the facility.

Fire stations from Larnaca responded to the scene with a fire engine and a rescue team.

Two injured taken to hospital

Two people were injured in the gas explosion in Vasiliko and were treated at the scene by members of the Fire Service before being handed over to ambulance crews.

They were transported to the accident and emergency department of Limassol General Hospital for further medical assessment.

Investigation underway

Authorities said the circumstances that led to the gas explosion in Vasiliko are under investigation by the Department of Labour Inspection.
