Two British women jailed 4 months for tobacco smuggling

Date:

Paphos District Court sentenced two British women to four months in prison without suspension on Wednesday after they tried to leave Cyprus with more than 25,000 undeclared cigarettes.

Customs officers at Paphos Airport stopped the pair on 20 November 2025 as they prepared to board a flight to the UK.

A risk assessment flagged their luggage, which contained:

  • First woman: 97 cartons (200 cigarettes each) + 287 packs (20 each) = 25,140 cigarettes
  • Second woman: 115 cartons (200 each) + 4 packs (20 each) = 23,080 cigarettes

All products lacked Greek/Turkish health warnings and official security features – clear signs of duty-free contraband.

Both women were arrested for instant offences, remanded for four days, and convicted today.

Total street value of the seized tobacco exceeds €12,000 in lost duties and taxes.
